Naturalization and Citizenship

Did you know that there are four ways to become a U.S. citizen?

  • Born in the United States,

  • Acquisition,

  • Naturalization,

  • and Derivation of Citizenship.

 

Did you know that in 2018 26,477 people were Naturalize in the state of Illinois, and 24,879 are from Core Areas like Chicago, Naperville, and Elgin.

 

The minimal requirements to apply for Naturalization are:

  • Be at least 18 years old.

  • Be a Lawful Permanent Resident for at least 5 years*

  • Demonstrate continuous resident in the United States for at least 5 years**

  • Demonstrate that you have been physically present in the United States (30 months out of the 5 years)

  • Be able to read, write, and speak basic English

  • Have a basic understanding of U.S. history and Government

  • Be a person of good moral Character

  • Be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance

  • Show that you have lived for at least 3 months in the state or USCIS district where you apply.
